The Yellowstone Caldera is the topic of the newest episode from the “Informed” series, hosted by Rob Lowe.

The caldera that resides beneath Yellowstone National Park has been a topic of interest for the American public in recent years. This peaked interest stems from an increase in seismic activity at the location, which could indicate the potential for volcanic activity to occur. The last eruption at Yellowstone occurred hundreds of thousands of years ago and seismologists have confirmed that the seismic activity occurring there is no indication of an eruption. The volcanic activity that has occurred here in the past is what has formed Yellowstone into what it is today. The caldera underneath the park is referred to by scientists as a super-volcano. An eruption from this super-volcano would be devastating for the planet as it would launch millions of tons of volcanic ash into the atmosphere, thus blocking a significant amount of sunlight to effect crop production. Top scientists in the field have made it very clear that there is no indication that the public should worry about an eruption from underneath Yellowstone. Some argue that the caldera is “due for an eruption” because it’s been hundreds of thousands of years since the last eruption. This amount of time is actually minuscule in terms of geologic and volcanic activity, reinforcing the fact that the caldera is not due to erupt.

“Informed” is an education series, hosted by Rob Lowe, that is distributed to Public Television PBS Member stations across the United States.

The sport of Cross Country Skiing is the topic of focus on the newest segment from “Informed”, hosted by Rob Lowe.

Cross country skiing is a popular recreational activity practiced by people throughout the world living in snow covered regions. Enthusiasts stretching from Scandinavia to parts of the United States and Canada practice this as a method of transportation and enjoyable activity. The act of cross country skiing goes back thousands of years, with evidence of it found in the Chinese mountains. The activity can be performed on various types of terrain ranging from mountainous, to flat, or even on trails specifically designed for it. There are two ways to propel oneself through the snow: using poles to push yourself along or moving side to side in a skating motion. As apposed to down hill skiing, the skier must use their own energy to propel themselves along.

Join the “Informed” team, along with host Rob Lowe, as they present this insightful look into the world of cross country skiing. “Informed” is distributed to Public Television PBS Member stations nationwide.

Hurricane Preparedness is the topic of focus in the newest episode from the “Informed” series, hosted by Rob Lowe.

Residents living in the Caribbean and southeastern United States are all too familiar with the destructive power a hurricane can bring. Long time residents of these locations have learned the most efficient methods for preparing for the effects of the storm before and after it passes. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1-November 30, and in that time period the most active time is during the end of August and into the month of September. One of the most important things to do to be prepared during this time is to closely monitor the weather forecasts and keep oneself constantly informed. Buildings in these hurricane zones are built to high standards that allow them to withstand potential winds over 150mph. Often times the wisest option when a storm will be affecting your area is to heed the warnings of government, and evacuate to a safer location.

Living in what many people consider to be paradise, does come with its risks. Proper preparedness is the key to minimizing loss of life and property. Join Rob Lowe, host of “Informed”, as he interviews top scientists and meteorologists in this field to provide viewers with the best advice on being prepared for hurricanes.
